TAKING BOLD
CLIMATE ACTION
FOR WARD 1
City government touches every part of our lives. Every decision we make should be through the lens of climate impact – from road design, to housing policies, to land use and beyond.
In Minneapolis, we’re already seeing the impacts of the climate crisis. We must act with urgency, as we know these impacts will disproportionately affect our most vulnerable neighbors and BIPOC communities. As a city, we must be a leader in taking bold action on climate change.
Here are my current priorities:
Make Minneapolis a leader in climate action
In 2023, we passed our Climate Equity Plan, setting ambitious climate and equity goals for the next decade. To succeed, we must lead by example and take bold action to meet these goals and actually deliver on our commitments.
Expanding transit access
With Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) coming to Central and Como Avenues and the pedestrian/bike friendly Lowry Ave redesign underway, there's a great opportunity to improve transit in Ward 1. I'll continue pushing for BRT on Lowry Ave and better connections to our bike network.
Continue investments in public EV charging access
I will keep advocating for the expansion of our city’s public EV charging program. More charging options will make it easier for everyone to switch from fossil fuel-powered vehicles.
Here are some of my accomplishments:
Established Carbon Emission Fees
Overturned a veto to allow the city to start charging carbon fees to our city’s largest polluters. Cities should do everything in their power to combat climate change.
Passed the Climate Legacy Initiative
Secured the first ever dedicated funding to combat climate change and work to achieve the goals set out in the Climate Equity Plan.
Hennepin Energy Recovery Center (HERC) Closure
Authored a resolution supporting the closure of the HERC, recommitting the city to prioritizing its investments in a zero waste future.
Improving Ward 1 Infrastructure
Shepherded the unanimous approval of the Lowry Ave and 37th Ave reconstruction projects, as well as approved funding to complete the Johnson St reconstruction project. Helped secure additional funding for both St Anthony Parkway and Ridgeway Parkway. All of these projects will improve all modes of transportation on these critical connections through Ward 1.
Authored the Paint Booth Ordinance
Unanimously passed an ordinance requiring businesses to switch the type of paint they use. This is a huge win for climate action in our city. Switching from solvent-based paints to waterborne paints will significantly reduce air toxics pollutants that can cause cancer and other serious health & environmental issues.
